Chewy and Michael: A Team Supported by LEAP Volunteers
Chewy, a 4-year-old Chihuahua/Rat Terrier mix, is more than just a pet — he’s a loyal companion for his owner, Michael, who is legally blind, lives alone, and is a Lubbock Meals on Wheels client. Since joining our LEAP program in July 2020, Michael has relied on the program’s support to help care for Chewy, ensuring his furry friend stays happy and healthy. Chewy, in turn, provides companionship, comfort, and independence for Michael, making everyday life a little easier.
Recently, Chewy had a veterinary visit that could have been stressful, but with the help of a LEAP volunteer and a little medication to keep him calm, the trip went smoothly. The photo captures Chewy comfortably riding in the car, relaxed and ready for his appointment — a testament to the care and preparation that goes into every visit.
We are incredibly grateful for our volunteers who safely transport pets like Chewy, and for our partner veterinarians who generously donate their time to provide veterinary care. Thanks to their dedication, pets and owners in our community receive the support they need, and families like Michael and Chewy can experience greater peace of mind, knowing that care and companionship go hand in hand.
