Finding Comfort and a New Beginning: Karma’s Story
When Karma wandered into Ms. K’s yard one morning, she had no way of knowing just how much this stray pup would change her life. Still mourning the recent loss of her beloved German Shepherd, Ms. K wasn’t sure she was ready to open her heart again. But her remaining dog, Duchess, had other ideas. Duchess bonded with Karma immediately, and it quickly became clear that this young dog was meant to be part of their family.
Karma’s gentle presence brought joy and light back into Ms. K’s home. “He changed the whole atmosphere,” she said. “We’re already so fond of him.”
When Ms. K brought him to Cherokee Animal Clinic for neutering, vaccines, and evaluation for a noticeable limp, Dr. Anthony Holcomb discovered that Karma had a fractured femoral head, likely a result of an old injury. The recommended treatment was surgery to remove the damaged portion of the femur, allowing him to walk and play without pain.
A longtime client of Dr. Holcomb’s, Ms. K is devoted to her pets’ well-being and committed to Karma’s recovery. However, ongoing medical expenses and living on disability left her unable to afford the full cost of Karma’s surgery.
Understanding both Karma’s need for surgery and Ms. K’s dedication as a pet owner, Dr. Holcomb applied for a Rusk Veterinary Assistance Grant on her behalf. “Having access to resources like the Rusk Grant allows us to say ‘yes’ to clients who just need a little extra help,” said Dr. Holcomb. “It means we can provide care that truly changes lives—for the pet and the person.”
For Ms. K, Karma is more than a pet—he’s family, emotional support, and a reason to smile each day. “He’s so smart, so sweet, and he trusts me,” she said. “I never thought I’d be in a position to ask for help, but I’m doing it for him. He deserves to live pain-free, and it would mean the world to me to see him happy and healthy again.”
Thanks to the support of compassionate donors, Karma is now on the path to recovery and a bright, pain-free future.
