LEAP Program Story: Joe & Stella

Nine-year-old Stella may be small, but the place she holds in Joe’s life is anything but.

The little dachshund mix came into Joe’s life two years ago through adoption. Stella needed a home, and Joe gave her one. Along the way, she began giving just as much back.

For Joe, Stella is companionship. She’s a familiar face to wake up to, a reason to smile and a steady presence in the everyday moments that might otherwise feel a little too quiet. She doesn’t need a conversation to know when Joe needs company, she simply stays close.

Their bond is a reminder of just how meaningful the connection between people and their pets can be, especially for homebound seniors. A beloved pet can bring companionship, comfort, routine and a sense of connection to each day.

At nine years old, Stella had already lived a life before Joe, but the past two years have given them both a new chapter. One built on trust, affection and the comfort of knowing someone is there.

With support from the Texas Veterinary Medical Foundation’s LEAP program and Meals on Wheels Rural Capital Area AniMeals on Wheels, Joe has a little extra help making sure Stella stays healthy and receives the veterinary wellness care she needs. And Stella takes care of Joe in the way only a beloved dog can—with loyalty, companionship and unconditional love.

Stella may have been the one who was adopted, but in each other, she and Joe found something they both needed: a home, a companion and someone to share life with.

Stories like Joe and Stella’s are possible because of the generosity of donors who continue to support the LEAP program. Thank you for helping older Texans care for the pets who bring so much companionship, comfort and joy to their lives.
