Rusk Grant Story: Helping CJ Return to an Active, Pain-Free Life

CJ is more than a pet—he’s a devoted companion, a constant source of joy, and an integral part of his owner Linda’s daily life. The bond they share is extraordinary, and despite facing her own significant health challenges over the past year, Linda continues to prioritize CJ’s well-being above all else.

CJ, a young and energetic dog, was diagnosed with severe osteoarthritis caused by canine hip dysplasia and by age four, the altered biomechanics of his hips had already caused significant pain and mobility issues. His veterinarian, Dr. Michael Orencole, of Dallas Veterinary Surgical Center, recognized that CJ was an excellent candidate for a total hip replacement (THR), a procedure that could restore him to a normal, active life.

Understanding the financial burden of such a surgery, Dr. Orencole wanted to help his client in any way possible. He turned to the Foundation’s Rusk Veterinary Assistance Grant program, an exclusive benefit for TVMA Members, knowing it could provide the crucial support needed to make this surgery possible. The grant allows veterinarians to help clients whose pets have a clear medical need but face financial limitations ensuring that pets like CJ can get the care they need without compromise.

Linda has already shown her dedication by organizing community fundraisers and doing everything she can to prepare for CJ’s surgery. However, as a retiree living on a fixed income, the costs of pre- and post-operative care are significant. The Rusk Grant provides the means to bridge that gap, allowing CJ to receive this life-changing surgery.

Today, CJ is still Linda’s shadow, her friend, and her source of joy. Their days are filled with simple routines that illustrate their deep bond: picking out a bandana each morning, playing fetch, riding in the car to check the mail, and sharing quiet moments on the couch or at bedtime. CJ knows Linda’s moods, responds to her commands, and communicates his affection in countless ways.

Thanks to the Rusk Veterinary Assistance Grant and Dr. Orencole’s commitment to his patient, CJ now lives his life free of pain and continues bringing happiness to Linda every single day.
