How the Rusk Veterinary Assistance Grant Makes a Difference for Pets and the People Who Love Them

Thanks to the continued generosity of Texas Veterinary Medical Foundation (TVMF) donors, the Rusk Veterinary Assistance Grant Program provides a critical safety net for pet owners facing unexpected hardship and gives pets like Lilly a fighting chance.

Lilly, a sweet and affectionate cat, had always been a healthy companion to her owner, Ms. Howell. But a sudden medical issue required hospitalization, a feeding tube, and an extended treatment plan. At the same time, Ms. Howell was dealing with a series of personal and financial challenges that made affording care nearly impossible.

“Lilly is truly like family—she’s my snuggle buddy, my other half, and my source of comfort,” Ms. Howell shared. “She came into my life as a tiny kitten and we’ve been inseparable ever since. I want to give her every chance at a healthy life, and the support from my veterinarian and TVMF meant the world to me. It reminded me that I wasn’t alone.”

Veterinarian Dr. Brady Hanson of Neighborhood Veterinary Centers applied for the Rusk Grant on Ms. Howell’s behalf.

“As a practitioner, it’s incredibly helpful to have a resource like this through TVMF,” Dr. Hanson said. “It allows us to provide care for beloved pets when their owners are going through a tough time. Sometimes people just need a little extra help, and this program lets us be there for them in a meaningful way.”
